Outrage as Columbus Day, Veterans Day Scrapped From Holiday Schedule

In recent decades, Columbus Day has divided. Some honor Columbus, but others condemn him as a colonizer who enslaved and brutalized countless indigenous people.

Some states and towns renamed the federal holiday Indigenous Peoples Day.

"A lot of bad things happened in this country after the discovery, let's not whitewash it," remarked. "I said what happened on October 12, 1492, the discovery of America, was the most significant event in the history of the human race."

"Slap in the face to the Italian community and our Veterans!" one Facebook user said.

Another termed it "disgusting" and claimed their child "will not go to school on those days."

"Good! One writer said kids take too many school days off. "Nobody is honored on those days off. Free day from school. Sad yet true."

On Tuesday, Esses emailed Newsweek: "Every American thanks our heroic Veterans and Christopher Columbus. I think students learn about their contributions in school.

Otherwise, kids have a vacation day without being reminded why we respect Veterans and Columbus."
